Glory 20 Enforcers 19
CHICAGO, IL--A few short weeks ago the Glory were sliding their way out of the playoffs and the Enforcers were running away with the East.
What a difference a few weeks makes.
Kyle Allen, in perhaps the best fourth quarter comeback performance by a Washington football team since Shane Falco, shook off a blitzing linebacker and headed towards the endzone and leapt past two more defenders and into the endzone with no time left and Austin MacGinnis hit the game-winning extra point as the Glory erased a 19-0 deficit and scored the final 20 points to stun the Enforcers, whose East lead drops to one as they try to figure what's going wrong in their third straight loss.
It looked like yet another disastrous performance for the Glory in Chicago as they turned the ball over four times in the first half, including on a jet sweep by Quincy Adeboyejo on the first play of the game. However while the Enforcers would put some distance between themselves and the other Washington football team, it was only 16-0 despite a lopsided 185-35 advantage in total yardage partly because Gardner Minshew threw a pair of interceptions and the Enforcers only got into the endzone once, on Antonio Callaway's first touchdown as an Enforcer--which was helped along by a roughing the kicker penalty on Maurice Hurst.
But the Glory finally got it going when Allen threw a 75-yard bomb to Ihmir Smith-Marsette to get Washington on the board, cutting it to 19-6 after the two-point try was no good. Then a 12-play drive got them to with 19-13 as Cardale Jones, who relieved Allen after he was hurt on a sack by Cameron Jordan, hit Adeboyejo for the score. Then Allen, back in the game, had three big plays on the final series, starting with a 33-yard pass to Jakobi Meyers; then a 25-yarder to Dez Fizpatrick on third and 27 from the Washington 36; and, after Allen nearly fumbled it away on a bad snap, a 28-yard pass to Smith-Marsette down to the 11 with 13 seconds left. Three plays later, David Long looked like he had Allen dead to rights for a game-ending sack, but Allen was able to evade him and found a lane to the 2 before making the leap, and while Dane Cruikshank met him at the goal line Allen's momentum pushed him through.
The crowd of 40,000-plus desperately waited out MacGinnis' extra point, hoping for a similar result as when Troy Dye blocked a field goal in the first quarter. But to no avail, as the first-year Glory kicker, perfect on extra points coming in, remained that way to give the Glory their first win in Chicago since 2014, when Ron Rivera took them to their second X-Bowl.
Washington ended with 273 yards despite Allen completing only 11 of 29 passes and their run game gaining just 45 yards. But their defense was strong again, holding their opponent under 20 points for the 12th time in 14 games this season.
The Enforcers have lost three straight for a third straight season under Rex Ryan after not having a three-game slide since 2010, his first year as head coach.
