Hitmen 26 Colonels 14
RALEIGH, NC--Darrel Williams probably won't look back too fondly at his time in Carolina during the 2022 season, with one exception: this one.
Williams, who rushed for 36 yards this season in ten games with the Colonels, rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown--a 38-yard score in the fourth quarter--as the New York Hitmen kept themselves right in the playoff picture with a 26-14 win Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium, eliminating the home team from the playoff chase.
The Colonels, who ended another fruitless home campaign at 2-5-1, did make Le'Veon Bell a non-factor, but Williams and Josh Adams both ran for touchdowns and Taylor Heinicke threw one as well as the Hitmen won their ninth in 11 games after an 0-4 start, which included a 19-13 overtime loss to the Colonels in New York back in week four. It was day of futility all around for the home team as they gained 231 yards and were 2 of 11 on third downs. It started with their first series where they took over just beyond midfield and went three and out, with Kevin O'Connell deciding to pin the Hitmen deep despite a fourth and 1. While New York didn't immediately capitalize that would set the tone for the rest of the half. Chad Henne was briefly knocked out of the game on Carolina's next series following a Kingsley Keke sack, and the Hitmen would find the endzone on a 28-yard pass from Heinicke to Joe Horn.
The Hitmen dominated on third down, as they converted nine of 16 attempts while Carolina was cold. Two came on the next series, an ten-play, 81-yard drive that ended in Adams' second touchdown run of the season to put the Hitmen up 14-0. The Colonels responded with a three-yard Jordan Howard touchdown run, but they were playing catch-up the rest of the way as Graham Gano added a 33-yard field goal just before halftime, then a 22-yarder in the third quarter before Williams' run, his third in five games with New York after none with the Colonels.
Perhaps putting an exclamation point on another frustrating home outing (and with them now out of the playoffs, the season as well) for the Colonels, Akeem Davis-Gaither picked off a short pass by Heinicke and took it back inside the 5, but the drive ultimately went nowhere as Henne was sacked by Keke and Jason Cabinda.
Bell ran for just 23 yards on 17 carries, but the rest of the offense was able to completely flip the script after an embarrassing 23-6 home loss to Tampa Bay last week. They held onto the ball for nearly 40 minutes and outgained Carolina 369-231. The Hitmen's final four scoring drives were all ten plays or more.
Henne, in likely his final home start for the Colonels, was 18 of 32 for 206 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Trask, the expected starter in 2023, teporarily relieved him and threw one incomplete pass. Jordan Howard, who went over the 1000-yard mark in the win over Orlando--all five years of his career, carried nine times for 49 yards and a touchdown.
