Lonestars 31 Xtreme 10
ARLINGTON, TX--A sunny and hot first Sunday of summer was just the excuse for two teams headed nowhere but to offseason planning, which for the Xtreme includes a new head coach after the firing of Winston Moss. But Bob Stoops' troops were set on going out on the high note of a season-ending three-game winning streak, and they did so with a 31-10 beatdown of the hapless Xtreme on Sunday at Choctaw Stadium.
Moss, in what would appear to be his final game as head coach, went to second-year man Jake Fromm. He looked like someone who had lost reps to K.J. Costello as he finished 23 of 50 for 245 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Those two picks came in the first quarter, setting the tone for the half as the Lonestars cruised to a 24-0 lead on touchdown passes from Brandon Silvers to Bennie Fowler and Albert Okwuegbunam and a Javonte Williams touchdown run.
The Xtreme's offensive, for lack of a better term, adventures, were so much that the crowd of just under 10,000 started booing when Dustin Hopkins came out for a field goal on fourth and goal from the 8. Fromm's first career touchdown pass, a six-yarder to Michael Pittman in the fourth quarter, made it a respectable 24-10 before Jaylen Samuels' one-yard plunge finished it with 3:55 left.
Josh Johnson, who was active as Fromm's backup, also looks to be done with the Xtreme although he ceded to Costello weeks ago.
Williams, in an up-and-down rookie year, finished strong with 16 carries for 93 yards and a score. Donovan Peoples-Jones, needing 59 yards for 1000, finished nine yards short with two catches for 50 yards while Williams caught seven for 72. Okwuegbunam's touchdown gave him nine, finishing the season with the team lead.
Despite a third straight 7-9 finish, Stoops was cheered off the field as he took a page from Jeff Fisher by shouting "No more 7-9 (stuff)!" as he exited.
The Xtreme finish the season 0-8 on the road and their 2-14 mark is their worst finish since the league moved to a 16-game schedule in 2019.
