Enforcers 22 Glory 3
CHICAGO, IL--Faced with the task of trying to put a tremendously difficult week behind them and focusing on getting back to their first X-Bowl in three years, the Chicago Enforcers had a simple task: flip the script.
As in when they hosted the Glory in week 15 they led 16-0 but lost on the final play. This time they led 16-0 at halftime but they wouldn't let the Glory anywhere close to coming back and stealing it, suffocating the Glory to just 158 yards of offense and sacking Kyle Allen eight times in a 22-3 strangulation at Soldier Field, once again ensuring they will play for the league's top prize after their longest drought in between X-Bowl appearances since they began their current run in 2012.
Gardner Minshew threw for 268 yards and a touchdown on 13 of 19 passing as he became the Enforcers' first quarterback to lead the team to the league's ultimate game since Jimmy Clausen retired. The Enforcers ran for 131 yards, finishing with 386 yards of total offense for the game.
Chicago actually made the first mistake of the game when Corey Clement fumbled, and Washington was moving the ball before stalling inside the 35. Pep Hamilton, coaching in his first playoff game, eschewed a would-be 50-yard attempt for Austin MacGinnis and went for it on fourht and 5 from the 33. But Allen's long pass for Dede Westbrook fell incomplete.
That would just be the start of Allen's day, as on the next series he was picked off on the first play by Godwin Igwebuike, setting up a short drive and a 48-yard Sam Ficken field goal. After a second field goal made it 6-0 Allen led the Glory into field goal range but MacGinnis missed from 39. Just a few plays later Minshew went up top and hit Golden Tate for a 48-yard score to make it 13-0, and another Ficken field goal late in the half pushed it to 16-0. The Glory could at least comfort themselves with the knowledge that three weeks ago they were in the same spot.
But this time they wouldn't be so fortunate, and they wouldn't catch the East division champions napping.
MacGinnis would hit from 42 for Washington's first points of the game on the opening series of the second half, and the Enforcers made sure those would be the only ones. The Glory would have just one first down the rest of the game until Clement's one-yard scoring run closed it out. Allen, playing in his first playoff game, was just 12 of 30 for 142 yards and a pick. With no Jermaine Eluemunor this time around and the Glory having to move some pieces around, the league's top sack team teed off with eight. Brent Urban, who had four sacks this year and hasn't had more than that in his eight-year career, had three to lead the way. Tashawn Bower, making his first playoff start under the most unfortunate circumstances, got in on the action with his first playoff sack, he played on special teams during Chicago's X-Bowl runs in 2018 and 2019, as well as in last year's loss to the Hitmen in the playoffs.
The Glory once again didn't have much of a run game going with just 63 yards, 25 of it was on one carry by Jonathan Williams. They came into the playoffs averaging just 3.4 yards per carry, worst among the four playoff teams and third-worst in the league.
As with last week, Jaylon Ferguson was honored before the game, this time with his jersey being presented with the name "Sack Daddy", his nickname coming out of Louisiana Tech where he became the all-time FBS sacks leader.
NEXT WEEK: WAS (10-7) end of season; CHI (12-5) X-Bowl XXII
