Monarchs 23 Enforcers 20
KANSAS CITY, MO--When Chicago and Kansas City met in the X-Bowl at Arrowhead Stadium ten years ago to kick off a nearly-annual X-Bowl rivalry--counting that matchup they've met seven times in the last ten seasons, Graham Gano won it with a 46-yard field goal with seven seconds left to give the Monarchs a 23-20 win and their first X-Bowl championship.
Get the idea of how this one went?
So naturally in run-it-back fashion, Nick Folk hit the game-winning 40-yard field goal, and, as Cameron Wake sacked Jimmy Clausen on the final play of the game in 2012, Darron Lee sacked Gardner Minshew and the Enforcers, out of timeouts, could not get another play off, sending the Monarchs to their fourth straight X-Bowl win in a classic battle of six-time champions.
By, of course, a 23-20 final.
It was the classic blow-for-blow battle you expected between the league's two alphas, and even when the Monarchs appeared to put some separation between themselves and the East champs, taking a 20-10 lead late in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Case Keenum to Terry McLaurin, the Enforcers stuck right back with a Sam Ficken field goal, and then the defense stood firm after the Monarchs once again looked to put the game away, as Nick Folk missed from 51. Another defensive stand would give Chicago a short field, and they went down in five plays to tie the game on a ten-yard James White run with 3:21 left.
After a short pass from Keenum to Demarcus Robinson to move the sticks, the Monarchs looked for the big play and they got it when Michael Carter took a screen from Keenum and went 38 yards with it down to the 26. The Enforcers used their timeouts to get the ball back with what looked to have been time enough to mount a comeback. Corey Clement returned the short kickoff to the 30, and Minshew hit Golden Tate for 25 before getting up and spiking the ball with 16 seconds left. But the Monarchs had all the proverbial exits covered leaving Minshew's only options in the middle of the field where the clock would have run out, before Minshew was hit by Lee and the clock ran out on the Enforcers anyway.
Keenum, injured in the week four matchup, in which the Monarchs would proceed to lose that game and then two straight in April, ended up once again on top with another strong performance, going 25 of 29 for 290 yards and two touchdowns. The Monarchs' current four-game X-Bowl win streak has coincided with him becoming the starter in 2019. David Montgomery ran 22 times for 90 yards and Carter, while only carrying twice for a single yard, caught four passes for 56 yards. Robinsin caught six passes for 114 yards, and McLaurin had both touchdowns.
Minshew finished 20 of 29 for 232 yards and a touchdown. Sam Ficken, who hadn't missed a kick since taking over as the kicker at midseason, missed from 54 late in the first half after a false start penalty backed the Enforcers up five yards.
The win was Matt Nagy's 80th, putting him well on pace to get his 100th in 2024. Both teams will meet again next year at Soldier Field, which will make the eleventh straight season they've played at least once during the regular season--they played twice in 2013 and 2017.
